The NOBO Thru-hiker reaches the New Jersey/New York border around mile 1,361 of the trail. The entrance into the Empire State is marked by a white divide painted on the rock trail. Within a half mile of the border, the hiker reaches Prospect Rock, the highest point on the A.T. in the state of New York (elevation:1867 ft). About 20 miles into the state, just past state route 17, the hiker approaches the Lemon Squeezer.
The Lemon Squeezer is a rock formation on the Appalachian Trail in Harriman State Park, NY. The hiker must squeeze through a narrow section of rock, and then quickly scramble up a rock face. At first, the trail passes under a giant boulder resting precariously on top of other rocks. After passing this point, the true nature of the Lemon Squeezer becomes apparent as the hiker suddenly gets “squeezed” through a path that is three feet high, one foot wide, and angled 15 degrees. Some travelers must take off their backpacks and manhandle them through the narrow path. This is a time when the small thin physique pays off. This sounds like a lot of fun and a physical challenge that provides a little adversity and a little adventure.
